And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. (Rom 5:3-6)

Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel. (Psalm 69:6)

Blessings of Being Ill

Today I am ill. We all can relate to this. With aches, cough, and lack of energy I am pretty much at a stand still to other endeavors. Compounding the problems at hand I am also supposed to preach at a friend’s church in another state. Please don’t take me for a whiner; it is only the Nyquil talking.

After going to bed early, I awoke today somewhat rested. My first thoughts upon waking were how glad I am to have not pushed harder in getting things done yesterday. This incapacitation has caused me to slow down, forcing me to do a few things out of the ordinary that I count a blessing. These are things that I unfortunately often overlook in my self imposed business.

I found myself spending unobstructed time listening to God. It is odd that I so often have thought I was listening to God by reading, praying, and thinking. These are all good. But yesterday I had to simply be still. I often spend hours in Bible study, but here all other priorities and distractions were sequestered. In my darkened bedroom I simply relaxed and spent time reviewing promises of God. In this approach I clearly received an understanding of truth to be applied to several situations. Being still and not working fastidiously on the problems of the day proved to be a great experience. This is somehow going to have to become a new facet of my life.

When we look at blessings we are naturally being thankful. The outcropping of thankfulness I had yesterday for my daughter caring for me, for my wife laboring to supply me with food and drink and my boys being ever so quiet has imparted to me a season of thanksgiving. I am thankful we have medicines. That we have stores supplies with more than we need. Grateful I am for the technology of refrigeration for my ice cold juice and research that produced Nyquil. Thus I am reminded to pray for those crippled by the tsunami in Japan and for our forces fighting in Afghanistan. I am very grateful that several people have been praying for our family.

The third prominent blessing of being ill was I actually took a restful time to listen to music. I have become in the last two years a great fan of classical music. Many of the pieces have me envisioning the music as a backdrop score for biblical events. Gymnopedie No. 1 is a serene piece that has me meditating on the Lord being my shepherd. But I also spent time with one of my new favorites, the Together for the Gospel 08. It is a great collection of songs sung by about four thousand people all gathered to exalt God. By listening to “In Christ Alone” and “And Can It Be That I Should Gain” can find a person quickened in the soul to look with proper perspective on this world and that beyond. This alone is blessing enough.

Through this I realize, I was sick and did not know it. I am not referring to being physically ill. I was aching and lacking in spiritual energy. All this was being caused by too much world and not enough God. Thank you Lord, for allowing me this time of respite. May I learn and apply all that You have graciously allowed me to see.

Rest

Ah, where do you go for rest? We small church pastors rarely see a sabbatical. And if you are like me you go away to return only to have everything you left behind waiting for you in urgency.
Our recent vacation was like that. All sorts of problems prevailed. God reminded me that problems will always exist this side of Heaven. But He also reminded me that He uses these problems to bring us to Him. Romans 8:28 and following, James chapter 1, and the testimony of the apostles has affirmed these things.
I would however like to point out a ministry in this country that seeks revival of the church and the refreshment of pastors. Life Action Ministries of Buchanan, MI is right on target. You can find them at lifeaction.org. They have several ministries, many of which include
Revival Summits in your church for lengths of 4 days to 14 days.
Revive Our Hearts with Nancy Leigh Demoss
The Lodge a retreat for the personal renewal of pastors and their wives.
Life Action Family Camps Each summer and twice in the fall Life Action supplies families with a place of respite. The gospel is displayed and families are drawn together. It combines the best of connecting with each other and connecting with God. For over ten years my family has made this a summer time ritual. It is more of a celebration. Our kids would rather go to camp than to Disney World. Each year has built upon the previous to give our family essential times of seeking the Lord together. I have seen several works of God over the years here. And as of this writing, something that rarely happens there has happened in abundance, in six weeks twenty people have come to know CHrist as their Savior, Lord, and Love!
If you need encouragement to press on, Life Action is a great source to equip and refresh you.

Priorities in 09

SO far it is the 14th day of 2009. I have been busy relaxing. That is right, relaxing to the Glory of God. As part of seeking God I have found that to persevere I need to have adequate rest. The way I have afforded such a luxury into my schedule is as follows...

First I assessed what is of value according to God.

Second I realize out of 1 Corinthians 10:13 that God gives us nothing we can't handle without Him, and He has a light yoke. So If I have the too busy syndrome, I must be adding to my schedule what should not be there.

Thus
, I have changed my schedule to be priority prioritized rather than goal driven. Some things will just have to wait till I have had time with God. Some days I find I need time with God in the morning, again after running around, and before bed.

Then again, some things are just going to have to be let go altogether. The world has so many distractions that I can't do it all. My time is going to be spent laying up treasures in Heaven and abstaining from futile endeavors. Mind you I will still pause for a good movie with the family, and may play one or two rounds of golf. But the striving to make my house magazine perfect on a dinner napkin budget will just have to go. All in all I am finding the balance of work and relaxation, with ample time for others, all this makes me readily more able to persevere.

Simply put. I am finding much more time for all that is required of me, and the joy that goes with it, when I simply take each day to the presence and glory of God.
